January 2003 Update

The indexes of the Thomas Todd and Kim Merker transcripts are complete. We will be sending them along with the texts to both Todd and Merker for final corrections after which they will be deposited at Columbia University.

Respectfully submitted,

January 2002 Update

During the past year our Handbook for Interviewers was shared with Professor George E. Thompson of the Art & Design Department at Columbia College in Chicago, Il.for use in his project to preserve and promote the history of graphic design in Chicago. His study is in conjunction with the Society of Typographic Arts (STA), and it may be included in the overall APHA project.

I also shared our Handbook with Jenni Matz of Oregon Public Broadcasting for use in her project on the Typophiles for the Oregon Public Broadcasting American Passages program.

I am happy to report that the interview with Harold McGrath by Diane Christian will be turned in today by Diane’s supervisor Martin Antonetti. Also, today, Mike Peich has the tapes of his interviews with Kim Merker ready.

The Oral History Committee will be meeting today following the Annual Meeting to plan future consideration of the list of 100 individuals to be interviewed prepared by Terrence Chouinard, the Assistant Director of the APHA Oral History Project.

This July (10-13) I will be giving a paper "Voices at the Digital Edge: The Oral History Project of the American Printing History Association" along with other APHA panelists at the SHARP Conference in London. Some of the material that I gathered recently at the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, and the Young Research Library at UCLA will be part of this talk. In addition to rewarding study in the libraries, I had informative meetings with Shannon Page, Production Manager of the Regional Oral History Office at Berkeley and with Teresa Barnett, Principal Editor of the Oral History Program, at UCLA.

January 2001 Update

Michael Peich has received  a grant from West Chester University to conduct his  interview with Kim Merker.

In response to requests for information and assistance, Project Chair Alice Beckwith wrote and designed an Interviewers Manual for the APHA Oral History Project and sent copies to Phil Cronenwett (Dartmouth), Eric Holzenberg (Grolier Club), Mike Peich (West Chester University), Terrence Chouinard (Wells College), and Janet Friskney (History of the Book in Canada).

Our proposed list of interviewees has been shared with the Director of the Grolier Club, Eric Holzenberg, to review overlaps with the Club's own oral history project and coordinate the interviews and avoid duplication.

I am sad to report that Harold McGrath, died November 14, 2000. Our video tape interview with him by Diane Christian is still being transformed into audio tape prior to its transcription.

Our new Assistant Director, Terrence Chouinard has arranged for Bradley Hutchinson to make an abstract and proper name index for his interview with Raymond McLain. Hutchinson plans to donate the interview to our archive at Columbia. Terry is also working on arranging other interviews, and I hope to have more information on this at our next board of directors meeting.
