What's New

The American Printing History Association encourages the study of printing history and its related arts and skills, including calligraphy, typefounding, typography, papermaking, bookbinding, illustration, and publishing. APHA is especially, but by no means exclusively, interested in American printing history.

Founded in 1974, APHA encourages the preservation of printing artifacts and source materials for printing history; APHA promotes research and scholarship through its annual conference and Lieberman lectures on a selected theme in printing history and through its oral history project and fellowship program; APHA publishes research in its scholarly journal Printing History as well as its Newsletter and special publications; and APHA recognizes distinguished achievement in the field of printing history through its annual individual and institutional awards. APHA's regional chapters sponsor active programs of lectures, field trips, and other opportunities to meet fellow APHA members on an informal basis. APHA now boasts over 700 members worldwide. Mark Samuels Lasner Fellowships in Printing History

The Mark Samuels Lasner Fellowship in Printing History winner for 2009 is Jacob W. Lewis for his work on artist and photographer Charles Nègre. Mr. Lewis was selected from 14 applications. His award was announced publically at APHA's annual meeting on January 24, 2009 at the New York Public Library.

A description of the program with an application form and all requirements is available online here.

For 2009, APHA has allocated funds from its operating budget to provide the award. However, continuance of the fellowship is not assured in 2010. To ensure the permanence of the Mark Samuels Lasner Fellowship in Printing History, APHA is actively engaged in raising an endowment. Our goal is a $50,000 endowment to provide a $2,000 annual award. As of December 2008, the endowment had met slightly more than 60% of its goal, but more donations are needed.  More information.

The Book Beautiful
APHA's 2009 Conference, October 16-18, Newport

APHA invites proposals for its Thirty-fourth conference, “The Book Beautiful,” to be held 16–18 October 2009 at Newport, RI. We seek presentations on all forms of printed and manuscript creation where the aim is to produce an object of beauty with form and content reinforcing one another. We welcome proposals which range across many historical periods, up to the present moment. The varied format of the conference will allow for a mix of short papers, panels with three or four participants and a moderator, and workshops and demonstrations by book artists located near Newport. William S. Peterson, emeritus professor of English at the University of Maryland and editor of APHA’s journal, Printing History, will deliver the keynote address.
